In 2024, researchers at Stanford's Human-Centered AI institute published a landmark study: they created AI agents calibrated with real individuals' survey data, then tested whether those agents could predict how those same individuals would respond to new questions they'd never seen. The agents matched the real people's responses with 85% accuracy across personality assessments, attitudinal surveys, and behavioral experiments.1
This built on earlier work from Stanford and Google2 demonstrating that generative agents with structured cognitive architectures exhibit emergent social behaviors that human evaluators rated as significantly more believable than simplified baselines. The agents answered questions correctly and interacted with each other in ways that were indistinguishable from human behavior.
These findings established something important: AI personas that are grounded in real behavioral data produce responses you can actually trust for decision-making. The quality of the simulation depends directly on the quality of the behavioral foundation underneath it.
Why behavioral grounding matters
Most AI-generated personas are built from stereotypes. You tell the model "act like a 35-year-old suburban mom" and it produces a character based on whatever patterns exist in its training data. The result feels plausible but has no empirical foundation. You're getting the model's best guess at what a demographic category acts like, instead of a profile grounded in what that population actually looks like.

From profiles to conversations
PreFlight's simulation layer takes the behavioral profiles generated by the modeling engine and uses them to ground conversational AI agents. You can ask these agents how they'd respond to a product concept, a piece of marketing copy, or a pricing strategy, and get responses that reflect the actual psychology of your target audience.
The value of this approach comes from the feedback loop between the statistical modeling and the simulation. The modeling gives you aggregate distributions (what percentage of your audience is price-sensitive, what percentage is brand-loyal, what personality profile is most common).
